A modern relative of the ancient (they arrived in europe about the 11th century) cimbalom from what is now Hungary, this hammered Dulcimer looks and sounds much the same. These days it's being used a great deal in Celtic music and there's no reason to think that the European forms (like the Swiss hackbrett) weren't present in some numbers in the Isles in early times.
This one has Red Oak pin blocks, African Mahogony (laminate) back and soundboard set off with Red Oak bridges and braces. It is based on a a set of plans available through The Guild of American Luthiers, and corrects many of the problems associated with traditional designs. In the photo below, note the slot in the bottom edge--this top is made to float across many of it's bearing surfaces so that it can handle changes in temperature and humidity. This and the other slot at the top also adds to volume and tonal breadth. Mr. Carruth, the designer, has created a superior design for the instrument.
